HAMILTON – Colgate Football wrapped up its Thursday practice just in time to participate in the annual season ticket-holders picnic adjacent to Crown Field at Andy Kerr Stadium.
The Raiders ate among a good crowd of attendees, who received the latest camp report from head coach Dan Hunt. Colgate is just over a week away from its 2017 season opener at Cal Poly on ESPNU.
"This team loves to play football," Hunt said. "We're a week away from getting on a plane for California. It's been a little bit different this year schedule-wise with the early game, but it's going to help us when we get out west to play."
Hunt also announced that team captains had been named, with Pat Afriyie and Alec Wisniewski selected on defense along with Ryan Paulish and Max Hartzman on offense. Hartzman spoke to the crowd on behalf of the captains.
"We have a lot of leaders on this team," Hartzman said. "It started in spring ball, then being up here all summer with a lot of the guys and leading right into fall camp. We're excited for the start of this season."

Hartzman Had to Sell Himself
Coach Hunt implemented a job interview structure to this year's search for captains. Those interested in a captaincy applied for the positions and then went through an actual interview process leading up to the team vote. In addition, captain positions were open to one and all.
"It was a little different from past years," Hartzman said. "You had to fill out an application, answer a set of questions and submit in writing what you planned to do as captain."
Hartzman said several team members stepped up and filled out the application.
"That was good to see," he said. "We have a lot of leaders on this team. Then we didn't vote until the second week of camp, which gave an opportunity for people to show their leadership and for the younger guys to see that leadership in action.
"I'm honored and blessed to be voted a captain by my teammates. I take a lot of pride in that and I look forward to leading this group to a successful year."
