HINSDALE CENTRAL AIMS FOR PERFECT `9'

Hinsdale Central's football team has a chance to be 9-0 for the first time.

All the Red Devils have to do is knock off No. 12 Downers Grove North (7-1, 4-1) Friday night at Dickinson Field in Hinsdale.

In the process, No. 7 Hinsdale Central (8-0, 5-0) would also claim the West Suburban Silver title and one of the top seeds in the upcoming state playoffs.

Undefeated seasons in 1960, 1961 and 1967 made the Red Devils mythical state champions. In that era, which preceded the playoffs, teams only played eight games in a season.

"This is the most focused group of athletes I've ever been involved with, and they want to do something that no Hinsdale Central football team has ever done," Red Devils coach Ken Schreiner said. "It's really a special group of young men."
