Senior quarterback John Whitelaw and a strong defensive effort helped make sure Hinsdale's homecoming game Saturday was a success.
The Red Devils pounded Downers Grove North 41-13 in a West Suburban Conference Silver Division contest in Hinsdale.
Whitelaw completed 8-of-13 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 207 yards on just eight carries and scored two more touchdowns.
Whitelaw scored on a 66-yard TD run on the second play from scrimmage to open the scoring.
Downers North (1-6, 0-4 in Silver) answered with a 15-play drive, capped by a 21-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Joseph Claver to Tyler Mason that evened the score at 7-7.
Hinsdale Central (5-2, 3-1 in Silver), which became playoff eligible with the victory, scored 34 unanswered points to put the game out of reach.
David Lutz rushed for 59 yards on eight carries and scored a pair of TDs for the Red Devils, who racked up 505 yards of offense, including 343 rushing yards.
Hinsdale Central senior wide receiver John Lyons caught two passes for 75 yards and a touchdown, while senior Chris Kiser caught two passes for 32 yards and a TD.
Jason Rafferty (interception, sack), Jack Allen (sack) and Lutz (sack) led the defense, which allowed 202 yards, with most of it coming late in the game.
Claver rushed for 87 yards on 27 carries to lead Downers North.
