HINSDALE — Hinsdale Central football coach Rich Tarka was hoping his team could tune up for the playoffs with an impressive performance Friday in the regular-season finale.

Instead, he had to settle for the Red Devils pulling out a hard-fought 20-17 West Suburban Silver victory over visiting York.

“We’re glad to win the game,” Tarka said. “York played us really tough, but we’re still making way too many mistakes. If that happens next week (in the playoffs) we’ll be one-and-done. We have a lot of work to do.”

Hinsdale Central (7-2, 4-2) trailed York (0-9, 0-6) 10-0 after one quarter, but scored 20 unanswered points in the second quarter to grab a 20-10 halftime advantage and then held on down the stretch.

Now the Red Devils are hoping to earn a home playoff game. Pairings will be announced Saturday night.

York senior quarterback Andrew Iwaszkiewicz booted a 31-yard field goal and then tossed a 15-yard TD strike to senior Austin Wagner (6 catches, 102 yards) to put the Dukes ahead 10-0.

Senior Jack Adams pulled Hinsdale Central within 10-6 on a 29-yard TD run with 8:47 left in the second quarter. Senior quarterback Brian Owens (13-of-21 passing, 222 yards) added a 5-yard touchdown run to give the Red Devils a 13-10 lead and junior Jacob White made it 20-10 with a 25-yard TD run with 1:57 left before halftime.

Wagner caught a 30-yard TD pass from Iwaszkiewicz with 5:22 left, but Hinsdale Central was able to run out the clock on the next possession.
