The Carnegie Mellon football team has split its opening two games this season, and some Chicago-area players on the team have made an impact so far.

The Tartans suffered a 36-14 loss to Washington & Jefferson on Saturday in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.

In all, the Tartans have 11 players from the state of Illinois, including freshman wide receiver JT Kolke (Hinsdale Central), senior safety Alex Byrnes (Hinsdale Central), junior linebacker Quinn Gaughan (York), junior offensive lineman Joe Levy (Glenbrook North), freshman linebacker Jake Cerwin (Carmel), freshman offensive lineman Thomas Yager (Maine South), sophomore defensive lineman Skyler Blacker (Libertyville) and junior defensive lineman Michael Lohmeier (Hinsdale Central).

Carnegie Mellon coach Rich Lackner said his staff makes a point of combing the Chicago area for potential high-caliber student-athletes.
