Kalsbeek finds ways to help, inspire Central teammates

Senior Davis Kalsbeek gets our unofficial service award for not only overcoming several shoulder dislocations that require surgery Wednesday to make a 13-yard pass reception and just miss on two other tries in the Hinsdale Central football team's 41-21 loss to Maine South in the Class 8A state championship game Saturday in Champaign.

Being sidelined didn't stop the 6-foot-1 Kalsbeek from making contributions. He helped scrape mud off teammates' cleats during the Bolingbook playoff game and gave an emotional invocation at the Red Devils' team banquet.

"It brought tears to the eyes of everyone in the room," Hinsdale Central football club president Tim Watkins said. "Many of our members asked for copies.

"Davis is a quiet young man, an excellent student and a gifted athlete who has had a very difficult senior year with that shoulder. He's never let it break his spirit. As I told his mom ...
